Thomas Florschuetz was born in 1957 in Zwickau, East Germany. He lived in East Berlin from 1981 until 1988, when he moved to West Berlin. He became Artist in Residence at Villa Aurora, Pacific Palisades, California in 2000. In 2007, Thomas Florschuetz was elected to the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. He now lives and works in West Berlin.
Florschuetz has been awarded numerous prizes, including:
First prize for new European photography
Dorothea von Stetten Prize, Bonn
German Criticsí Award for Fine Arts.
Deutscher Kritikerpreis für bildende Kunst, Berlin
His work was first exhibited in the US in 1989 as a part of the Museum of Modern Art’s New Photography V series. In 1993 his works were included in Multiple Images and in 1998, Object and Abstraction: Contemporary Photographs at MOMA. His work was also shown in the following exhibitions:
